DUTCH DESIGN WEEK 2012 - Finale

On the last day of Dutch Design Week 2012 we ventured far (well, far by Eindhoven's standards - about 3,5 km) east to Sectie C. We took a closer look at how Mint Collective, comprised of 12 Design Academy's graduates, has turned an empty industrial space into a cozy studio. We then dropped in on the graduates of Royal College of Art in the neighboring warehouse and finally headed for our last stop - Eat Drink Design at Kazerne & Loods (we admit to being as drawn by the event's catchy name as by the list of exhibiting designers).

DUTCH DESIGN WEEK 2012 - At Piet Hein Eek's

It was an early Saturday afternoon in Eindhoven's suburban Strijp R district, one of those when the streets are empty and the city refuses to wake up at such ridiculously low temperature. In these surroundings dozens of cars squeezed next to each other along both sides of Halvemaanstraat looked particularly out of place. But everything became clear once you realized that it was one of the last days of DDW and Halvemaanstraat was the street leading up to Piet Hein Eek's workshop. DUTCH DESIGN WEEK 2012 - DAE Graduation Show

After visiting the Graduation show at Design Academy Eindhoven yesterday it became clear to us that the term "designers" is all too narrow to describe DAE's graduates, as their projects cover much broader topics. Just to name a few: healthcare, pharmacy, meteorology, brain science, pesticides, physics, mental conditions, resocialization of prisoners, disabilities, carbon dioxide pollution...these fields have been explored and researched for the students' theses and it was the combination of them and the design thinking that made the projects so diverse, gripping and innovative.

We wish we could show all of them, but the selection had to be made. Those anxious to miss loads of emerging talent that did not make it to our list only due to limited space should rush to DAE's website.

3D PRINTSHOW LONDON 2012

This past weekend London has seen a one of its kind event that celebrated the latest technological advances in the area of 3D printing by bringing together the industry, the design world and the general public. Aside spectacular live demonstrations numerous workshops and seminars took place to address the most bewildering challenges and opportunities arising from the growing scope of 3D printing. The key phrases were ' open source', 'zero waste', 'bespoke production' and 'online customization' to name just a few. In the flutter of a high tech fair we were looking specifically at how art and design respond to the new spectrum possibilities offered by the soaring technology of 3D printing.

VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2012 - DAY 3

Although the Passionswege projects may have dominated our report from Vienna Design Week so far, it doesn't mean that there isn't much going in other venues. On the contrary, the festival schedule is packed with a lot of events not to be missed. What we show here is just the tip of the iceberg - but the rest of it worth exploring, too.

VIENNA DESIGN WEEK 2012 - DAY 2

AEveryone loves a good collaboration. And nine of them, exhibited within a few days, in the city that is indisputably Europe's cultural capital - it seems too good to be true, but such things do happen at Vienna Design Week.
